The name tennis bracelet became popular after a famous incident involving tennis star Chris Evert during that year’s U.S. Open. During a match, her diamond bracelet broke, and she asked to pause the game until it was found.

When asked afterwards what had happened, she replied that she had lost her tennis bracelet. This incident drew attention to the bracelet style and cemented its association with the name tennis bracelet.
